You may have noticed that Google’s logo today honors Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge’s 225th birthday! So why is Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge so important to remember?

Well, Friedlieb was a German chemist who, in 1819, became the first person to identify the active ingredient in coffee beans that we now know as caffeine. Since this incredible discovery, he has gone down in history as ‘the godfather of caffeine.’

Where would we be without you, Friedlieb? Completely unable to measure the difference between dark and light roasts, no doubt! We’ll pour one cup of coffee out in your memory today – Happy Birthday!
